Tucson Mixed Media: Marble, Smalti and Found Gems Spring-2017

Tucson Mixed Media: Marble, Smalti, and Found Gems

Tucson is swiftly becoming a mosaic destination extraordinaire. What makes Tucson so amazing? Between its famous “Rock and Gem”show, and the wonderful di Mosaico retail outlet—not to mention it’s lovely winter weather—Tucson has everything one needs for creating gorgeous mosaics. Come learn how to put all these amazing elements together with visiting Canadian artist Margo Anton.

Working with “found”gems, marble, and smalti, students will create a 10”by 12”work on wediboard.  After learning how to incorporate found gems as “rock stars”or as “back up singers”into your design, you’ll be able to chose from di Mosaico’s vast array of smalti and stone for the remainder of your  piece.

Students will work with hammer and hardie as well as nippers in this class. If unfamiliar with the hammer and hardie, never fear!  Margo has taught numerous people how to use one, and will have you up and chopping in no time with a hammer and hardie tutorial. Rock can have a mind of its own, and learning to use a hammer and hardie is the first step in mastering it.

As work begins on your piece using thin set, Margo will provide lots of individual attention as you delve into mixing your materials. Andamento—such a hot topic—will be discussed in terms of its ability to create feeling and atmosphere. Don’t just lay your tesserae, make them evoke something!

All materials will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own treasured gems such as ammonite fossils, fluorite, pyrite, selenite, desert roses, etc, or chose from semi precious items carefully selected at Tucson’s famous Rock and Gem show.
